the goal of this master thesis is to design and implement an iPad app that reanimates – and rethinks – the tradition of »marginalia« for digital documents (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marginalia ). this app would allow someone with an iPad to annotate documents, most likels PDF documents, outside of the document margin, not only in the existing, often too-small margins, but beyond those margins, as this is the space that digital representation of the document opens up. additionally, the app should offer ways to create meaningful annotations beyond just using the pen, eg. the standard grammar-correction symbols, manicules, or other forms of traditional or new symbolic annotations. the master thesis would include some research on the tradition of marginalia, concept creation, design and implementation of an iPad app. interest in design, typography and calligraphy is of advantage, experience with iOS coding would be great.

we will sooner or later be able to go back to restaurants & cafes. after a year of distancing, some have a heightened need for social contact & real-world conversation. this bachelor or master thesis would encompass exploring the space of technologically-mediated or -enabled random lunch meetings at cafes and restaurants (especially) in vienna. possible components of such a system are mobile services or a mobile app, an interface for restaurant owners to announce their participation, and some form of communication to complement it.
labyrinths are wonderful little puzzles that can be used to show what algorithms are, how they work, and what that different algorithms have different strenghts and weaknesses. in a current research and design project, we are creating MOOC units for parts of the »ways of thinking in informatics course«. for computational thinking, this bachelorproject for two persons or masterproject for one person should design and implement a »labyrinth lab«, where students can experiment with algorithms in labyrinths. eg. it should be possible to see how different algorithms solve different labyrinths, follow the execution of the algorithm debugger-style through the labyrinth, and maybe even construct individual labyrinths for the algorithms to solve.
the goal of this master thesis project for one or two students is to create an AR app that replaces all branding in (predominantly) orban space with other content. one replacement could be the color yellow, in the spirit of the art project »Delete!«; another replacement could be the name of the company that owns that brand, eg. replacing Billa, Merkur, Penny, and ITS Reisen with ReWe Group. More ideas are welcome. The project comprises of the design and implementation of a mobile phone app for iOS (optionally also Android), the market research brand signs to replace, and the dissemination of the app as an art project.
the CMU mocap dataset is a collection of 2537 actions like walking, talking, jumping etc. generated from motion capture. it is used, among others, in machine learning settings, and can there become a source of (well-hidden) bias eg. if all those motions were only generated from male, or healthy, or typically western people. the goal of this master thesis is to discuss how bias is defined in the context of such a dataset, how the dataset can be evaluated for various biases, and conduct exemplary evaluations for one or more bias dimensions. data set bias evaluation is an exciting new research area that is steadily gaining in importance.
the goal of this bachelor or diploma thesis project is to conceptualize, design and implement an app that lets groups of people decide on simple decisions like which movie to watch, which food to order, which book to read etc. a prototypical implementation will be evaluated to see whether this approach is viable.
the goal of this master thesis is to get answers from national and international researchers and practitioners in digital teachning & learning (online learning, blended learning, etc.) about their experiences from the turbo-digitalization we all experienced during the last months. the thesis should collect a »state of the art« overview over a to-be-defined area of learning technology & didactics from before the pandemic (easy, since most publications are from that time) and then contrast it with recent statements from key researchers and practitioners that already reflect their experiences and research from the last couple of month. no programming required.
in a recent master thesis in biomedial enginering, a concept was developed and evaluated for an app that supports professional caregivers in their work with demential patients. the concept focusses on »reminiszenzarbeit«, reminicence work. in this bachelorthesis or master project for one or two persons, a prototype is to be implemented of such an app, and evaluated in a real care context. while the information architecture is given, the design is still competely open.
for an ongoing project at the research group we urgently need test data generation and unit test scripts. the project is in constant change, with many independent developers working on different parts. in order to maintain basic functionality across all places of construction, we need unit tests, or even better, unit test generators, and test data generators/factories. this would make a brilliant bachelor thesis for a software engineering student; it could also become a more research oriented work in a master thesis where new forms of test data or unit test generation are explored and evaluated.
The goal of this master thesis for one or two students is to create a »Sammelkartenspiel« about the Scope and Diversity of Researchers in Informatics. An ideal outcome would be a game that consits of collecting and trading cards that show outstanding reserarchers from informatics throughout history and at the same time unveals the hidden or ignored »minority« researchers like PoC, women, etc. A stretch goal (two students) would be to come up with some sort of competitive game mode like celebrity deathmatch, or maybe a playful reflection on professor appointment procedures. since we cannot really produce and sell the cards, all should happen within an (iOS+Android) mobile app.
Speaking in front of a real audience is a huge challenge for some people. The goal of this master thesis for one person is to create a VR system that lets you experience talking in front of a large crowd. It should include a 360° recording of a lecture hall or similar setting, the possibility to include your own slides as the presentation shown on the projection, and random events like audience showing up late or leaving, dropping pens, talking, etc. Ideally, it ends with a round of applause at the end. The system is to be implemented and evaluated.
while there are numerous general purpose and special purpose diary apps on iOS, there is no diary app focussed on research diaries. a »research diary« is a tool to reflect on challenges, problems and progress of your work in qualitative research.
in this master thesis for one or two students, an iOS app to support managing a research diary. this includes a good design and layout, templates for different research diary components, overview and synopsis functionality, process support like goal setting, progress tracking and notifications, and ideally a way to publish the diary online. starting point will be to understand what a research diary is, and analyse existing diary apps for iOS in order to recognise what makes a good diary app. of course, the master thesis process will encompass the writing of a research diary.
iOS development experience is of advantage.
based upon scott mcclouds »understanding comics« book series, this bachelor thesis for one or two students or master thesis for one student should examine the possibility to translate lecture slides into graphic non-fiction. the goal is to draft, design and implement a system that can takes slides from lectures i.e. images + presenter notes that are appropriately amended with meta-information, and turn them into a comic in the style of »understanding comics«. the lectures from »denkweisen der informatik« (ways of thinking in informatics) can be used as original material.
this work is part of the ongoing research project »aurora«. we use the django framework, the result should be web pages or pdf.
preliminary note: aurora is currently out of development, all further work has been stopped, and it’s future is unclear. this topic is outdated for the time being.
Aurora is the online-system we use to facilitate our first-semester course »Ways of thinking in informatics«. Among other things, it offers double-blind peer reviewing, a highly organized access to the lecture slides, an inventive threaded discussion system, and a kanban-based feedback subsystem.
We are always looking for students who want to contribute to Aurora in the context of their bachelor or master thesis. Possible challenges range from refactoring, quality assurance and updating of components to the design and implementation of new, innovative parts of the system.
